Support Missional-Ecumenism

One of my friends in ministry is Dr. John Armstrong.  His organization, ACT3, stands for Advancing the Christian Tradition in the Third Millennium.

I’m excited about the vision I see John ardently pursuing.  I have watched it gradually clarify and intensify in the 8 plus years I have known him.

In a sentence, John is committed to seeing Jesus’ prayer in John 17 be fulfilled in our generation.  Jesus prayed that all believers would be one that the world may know that the Father has sent the Son.  The most important apologetic, according to John Armstrong, is the unity of the Christian church.  We can have all the right arguments about the truth of the faith, but the world will disregard us if we keep distancing ourselves from other Christians.

There are two typical errors which we must avoid in ecumenical goals:

1)  Believing that “spiritual unity” is satisfying to Jesus.  That is to say, “we are truly one,” even though we are formally divided and out of communion with one another.  We may say, “we are one,” be we do not look like it through our fighting and separation.  The world isn’t fooled friends!

2)  Avoid watering down our differences which leads to a “Kum by ya” gathering amounting to nothing but irrelevant dribble.  John stands firmly in the Christian tradition using great articles of the faith like the Nicene Creed to be the basis of Christian truth and unity.  Furthermore, that unity is vital to mission to proclaim Christ (hence the term “missional-ecumenism.”)

Pursuing true Christian unity requires faith (that God can move mountains), hope (unsatisfied with the status quo), and love (to combat fear “there’s no fear in love”).  John is a mature guide to lead God’s people to glorify Christ in Christian unity.

I hope you’ll enjoy this link to see his video and get involved as God has enabled you.

Grace and peace,

Tim

I hop, you hop, we all hop for IHOP

This weekend I took Darby, my third oldest girl out for a daddy daughter date.  We went to IHOP for breakfast (her choice).  She redeemed a coupon I gave her as a Christmas gift (see BEST Christmas gifts blog entry), breakfast out with Dad or mom.

Since Darby wants to be a writer I had her narrate a bit about our morning.  Enjoy!

Darby’s entry

“Me and My Dad went on a daddy daughter date.  We went to IHOP.  I had coffee; he had water. I had five pancakes!

He taught me how to open a sugar (pack).  I don’t know how many creams I used.  I counted six empty containers of cream.  Funny!  We had a great time at IHOP.  Just me and my Dad.

Daddy put tobasco sauce on his pancakes.  I double-dog dared him to eat it.  And he ate it.  It was disgusting!

We filled out the comment card in crayon–red, green, blue and orange.

Narrated by Daddy & Darby.

Grace and peace, Tim
