Zach Update #12 — Zach’s new eye

This week we finally got it–Zach’s new eye!

On Wednesday Sarah and I went together to Greg Dootz’s office at the Kellogg eye center in Ann Arbor.  All I can say is WOW!  I’m amazed at how real it looks.  There were two special moments: The first moment was seeing the eye itself in Greg’s hand.  It was the work of many hours of fitting, design and craftsmanship.  By just looking at the eye alone, it was obvious that this new eye looked just like Zach’s other eye.  Zach’s prosthetic is so well done, it’s remarkable.

The prosthetic eye is a convex fitting that inserts on top of the replacement eyeball (orbital implant) and under his eye lids.  It has a certain range of motion–moving with the motion of the implant.  Here’s what it looked like in Greg Dootz’s hand.

Secondly, seeing Zach’s beautiful face restored to completion and balance was a sight to behold.  For the past 3 months we’ve enjoyed his smile and everything with just one eye, but it was sometimes awkward in public and just plain hard knowing that such a beautiful part of his body was missing.  Seeing Zach’s face now restored was an awesome moment.  And now you get to see him too.  By the way, can you tell which eye is the prosthetic?  Bet you can’t!  It’s hard to tell in person as well.

We’ll add some more reflections in the days to come, but we just wanted you to see the answer to your prayers for our son, Zach.  He’s cancer free and both of his exams under anesthesia have revealed no cancer in the seeing eye.  And now his face looks complete again.

It’s such a joy to see his whole face again.  Looking forward to seeing you in person…

Blessings,

Tim, Sarah and Zach

PS.  If you look on the wall behind us, you can see photos of other patients of Greg’s.  Soon Zach will join the wall of fame!

I just couldn’t believe it when I saw it. I think I might have been feeling a little taste of what it would have been like to have Jesus walking among us and seeing the miraculous. So cool! I’m so thankful.

I am praising the Lord for such an amazing answer to prayer! What a wonderful gift that our strong God has given….He all knowing… before the foundations of the earth gifted a craftsman who would be directed to add to the beauty of an already wonderfully made litte boy. Thank you for allowing me to hear your story.

I just read your blog about your beautiful son, Zach…found this site while browsing on google…your story has been most uplifting…God is sooo
amazing! Nothing is by accident…Your faith journey through all this is
truly inspiring…for whatever a person is walking through.
My son, Nathan (31), was just diagnosed with a condition in his right eye
that resembles an eye parasite from someone living in Africa! No, he’s never been to Africa, but he did some missionary work in Guatamala about 10 years ago…I guess a parasite can live in your body that long without you
knowing it…doctors don’t know what treatment they’ll pursue, but I’m believing in the miracle work of our Lord and Savior to do the work. Trusting and leaving it with the Lord is sometimes the hardest part!
Thank you for your postings…they have been very encouraging to me…
I look forward to reading of Zach’s continued success with health and life:)
May the Lord continue to Bless your family richly…

      Hi Linda,

Thanks for writing. I hope and pray that your son will experience full recovery of his eye.

  16. Wow, am so happy for Zach! The new eye looks totally natural. My son is being treated for Rb as well – just curious, how long did it take for new tumours to cease in the good eye? This is my son’s 8th month of EUA’s and new ones seem to keep coming up!

      Hi Devi,

In Zach’s case he never had any tumors in the good eye. If the EUA’s are revealing a tumor (or tumors) in the remaining eye, that is a very troubling circumstance. What have your doctors recommended?

      Tim

      • Well the doctors recommend frequent checkups and laser treatment as soon as something new comes up. We also just finished 3 additional cycles of chemo. So we have doctor visits every 3-4 weeks and waiting for the new tumours to subside! But apparently, as the baby gets older, the likelihood of new tumours coming up will reduce – Suri is turning 1 soon, so fingers crossed!
